Russia and Ukraine have agreed to a temporary ceasefire in the Russian-occupied Ukrainian town of Oleshky, beginning October 27, 2026, to facilitate humanitarian assistance and civilian evacuations. The agreement, announced on October 23 and coordinated with assistance from US First Lady Melania Trump, comes as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed plans for renewed peace negotiations involving Russia and the United States in November. Russia-Ukraine Ceasefire to Allow Oleshky Evacuations The temporary ceasefire will suspend military operations in Oleshky, located across the Dnipro River from the Ukrainian-controlled city of Kherson. Russian military chief Valery Gerasimov and Ukraine's General Staff confirmed that the ceasefire would begin at 4 am local time on October 27. Humanitarian operations will include clearing mines from access roads, delivering food and medical supplies, and evacuating residents through designated safe corridors. Approximately 1,700 to 2,000 people remain in Oleshky, compared with around 24,000 before the war. Melania Trump Helps Broker Humanitarian Agreement Both countries acknowledged Melania Trump's involvement in coordinating the humanitarian arrangement. The US First Lady highlighted severe shortages of food, clean water and medicine affecting Oleshky's remaining population, particularly elderly residents. The agreement follows diplomatic discussions involving American representatives and both governments. Zelenskyy Announces November Ukraine Peace Talks Zelenskyy said negotiators from Ukraine, Russia and the United States were preparing technical-level talks during the first half of November. Abu Dhabi is being considered as a venue, with Switzerland also mentioned as a possible location. The Ukrainian president reiterated that any permanent settlement must include credible security guarantees and long-term military funding. Separately, Russia and Ukraine exchanged 270 military personnel each on October 23, marking their first prisoner exchange since August. Territorial disagreements, particularly over the Donbas region, remain significant obstacles to a comprehensive peace agreement.
