The US Federal Aviation Administration is investigating a brief loss of required separation between President Donald Trump’s Marine One helicopter and a passenger jet near Washington. Officials stressed that the aircraft were not on a collision course and Trump was never in danger. Marine One Passenger Jet Incident The incident occurred after Marine One departed the White House area on Tuesday afternoon, carrying Trump towards Joint Base Andrews. Around one minute later, an Envoy Air regional jet took off from Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport for Pensacola, Florida. Preliminary information indicated the aircraft came within approximately 0.8 miles horizontally and 700 feet vertically. Aviation rules for the area require separation of at least 1.5 miles horizontally and 500 feet vertically. The FAA described the occurrence as a momentary loss of separation but said the aircraft continued moving away from each other. FAA Investigates Air Traffic Failure Investigators are examining why commercial departures were not temporarily halted when Marine One entered nearby airspace. Air traffic control recordings reportedly captured the helicopter crew making repeated attempts to notify controllers that it was preparing to depart. Controllers remained in contact with both aircraft during the incident. Another regional flight was instructed to circle temporarily as a precaution before being allowed to continue its approach. Reagan Airport Safety Rules Reviewed The FAA introduced tighter helicopter restrictions around Reagan National Airport following the January 2025 collision between an Army Black Hawk helicopter and a regional passenger aircraft. All 67 people aboard the two aircraft were killed. Current procedures require take-offs and landings to be paused when helicopters use potentially conflicting routes near the airport. The FAA and National Transportation Safety Board are reviewing whether communication or procedural failures caused the latest incident. The White House said Marine One was operated by highly trained pilots and maintained that the president was not placed at risk.
