India is set to invest up to Rs 13,000 crore in a dual-use airport and runway project on Great Nicobar Island, a move expected to strengthen civilian connectivity and improve India’s strategic posture in the Indian Ocean region. Great Nicobar Airport Project The airport is planned as part of the broader Great Nicobar Island development project in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. It is expected to support both civilian flights and military operations, making it a key infrastructure asset for the island territory. The project is likely to be completed in around five years. Once ready, the airport will be under the operational control of the Indian Navy, while also improving air access for residents and economic activity in the region. India’s Indian Ocean Strategy Great Nicobar’s location gives the project major strategic significance. The island lies close to the Strait of Malacca, one of the world’s busiest maritime routes connecting the Indian Ocean and the Pacific Ocean. A dual-use airport in this region will help India strengthen surveillance, logistics and rapid deployment capabilities. It will also improve the country’s ability to monitor maritime movement near a crucial global shipping corridor. Civilian And Military Benefits Officials view the airport as both an economic and security asset. Better air connectivity can support tourism, local development, emergency response and movement of essential supplies. For the armed forces, the airport will improve India’s forward presence in the eastern Indian Ocean. The project comes as India continues to upgrade infrastructure across the Andaman and Nicobar Islands to support long-term maritime security and regional connectivity.
