Maharashtra onions – Bharat Pulse News

Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar has urged the central government to reconsider its decision to impose a 20% export duty on onions. Highlighting the severe impact on farmers and traders, Pawar emphasized the urgent need to address the economic challenges faced by the state's agricultural sector. Call for Immediate Action Ajit Pawar stated that the export duty is adversely affecting onion growers in Maharashtra, one of the largest producers of the crop in India. The export duty, imposed earlier to stabilize domestic prices, has significantly reduced the competitiveness of Indian onions in global markets. Farmers in Maharashtra are grappling with reduced income due to falling onion prices. The situation is exacerbated by rising production costs and limited access to international markets, leading to economic distress among the farming community. Pawar appealed to the Centre to revoke the 20% export duty, arguing that it would provide much-needed relief to farmers and restore market stability. Widespread Impact on Farmers The imposition of export duty has created a dual challenge for farmers: Decreased Export Demand: The additional cost has made Indian onions less attractive in international markets, reducing export volumes. Plummeting Domestic Prices: With surplus onions flooding the domestic market, prices have sharply declined, adding to the woes of farmers. Local farmer organizations have expressed their concerns, stating that the export duty has not only hurt their livelihoods but also undermined the agricultural sector's contribution to the economy. Political and Economic Implications The onion crisis has become a politically sensitive issue in Maharashtra, with opposition leaders and farmer unions calling for immediate intervention. Pawar’s plea is seen as a critical step in advocating for the welfare of the state's agricultural community. The state government is also exploring alternative measures to support farmers, including subsidies and procurement schemes. However, Pawar insists that removing the export duty is the most effective solution to address the current crisis. As Maharashtra's onion growers await relief, the central government’s response will be crucial in determining the future of this essential agricultural sector.
