A co-owner of Lanka Premier League franchise Jaffna Kings was arrested in Sri Lanka over allegations of attempting to bribe a player, hours before the opening match of the 2026 tournament. Authorities launched an investigation after the player reported the alleged approach. Jaffna Kings Co-Owner Arrested Sri Lanka’s Special Investigations Unit for the Prevention of Offences Relating to Sports made the arrest on July 17. Investigators alleged that the franchise co-owner had offered money to a player in connection with the Lanka Premier League. The player reportedly informed authorities about the approach around 10 days before the arrest. The complaint led to an investigation by the specialised law-enforcement unit responsible for offences linked to sport. The identity of the arrested co-owner was not officially confirmed in the initial announcement. Sri Lanka Cricket Backs Investigation Sri Lanka Cricket said it was aware of reports concerning the arrest and would fully cooperate with investigators if assistance was required. The cricket board said its Anti-Corruption Unit had been working closely with government investigators before the tournament to strengthen the league’s integrity framework. Independent integrity specialists have also been appointed for the 2026 season to provide anti-corruption support, monitoring and education throughout the competition. Lanka Premier League Continues as Planned Sri Lanka Cricket confirmed that the tournament would proceed without interruption despite the arrest. Jaffna Kings were scheduled to face Galle Marvels in the opening match at the Sinhalese Sports Club Ground in Colombo. The board reiterated its zero-tolerance policy towards corruption and unethical practices. It said all necessary measures would be taken to protect the fairness and reputation of the Lanka Premier League. Further legal proceedings will depend on the findings of the investigation. The bribery claim remains an allegation unless established through the judicial process.
