Light Combat Aircraft – Bharat Pulse News

In a strategic move to bolster the production of indigenous Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) and enhance private sector participation, the Indian Defence Ministry has established a high-level committee led by Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh. This initiative aims to address existing production challenges and expedite the induction of LCA jets into the Indian Air Force (IAF).Currently, Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) is the sole manufacturer of the LCA Tejas jets. However, production delays have been a persistent issue, primarily due to supply chain disruptions and logistical challenges. To mitigate these delays and meet the IAF's operational requirements, the newly formed committee is exploring avenues to involve private sector companies in establishing additional production lines. This collaborative approach is expected to augment manufacturing capacity and ensure timely delivery of aircraft. The IAF had previously placed an order for 83 LCA Mk-1A jets in February 2021, with deliveries scheduled to commence by March 2024. However, setbacks, including delays in the supply of F404 engines from General Electric, have impeded progress. To address the shortfall in its fighter squadrons, the IAF is contemplating an additional order for 97 LCA Mk-1A jets, underscoring the urgency to scale up production capabilities. The Defence Ministry's decision to integrate private enterprises into the LCA production ecosystem aligns with the broader 'Make in India' initiative, aiming to achieve self-reliance in defense manufacturing. By leveraging the expertise and resources of private industry, the government seeks to create a robust defense industrial base, reduce dependency on foreign suppliers, and enhance the operational readiness of the armed forces. This development comes at a critical juncture, as the IAF's current fighter squadron strength stands at 31, significantly below the sanctioned strength of 42 squadrons. The induction of additional LCA jets is pivotal to bridging this gap and fortifying the nation's aerial defense capabilities. The high-level committee's recommendations are anticipated to expedite decision-making processes, streamline production workflows, and foster a synergistic partnership between public and private sectors in defense manufacturing.
