Leander – Bharat Pulse News

Tennis legend Leander Paes has joined the Bharatiya Janata Party, stepping into active politics ahead of the 2026 West Bengal Assembly election. The former doubles world No. 1 and one of India’s most decorated athletes said the move gives him an opportunity to serve the country in a new way after spending decades representing India on the court. Leander Paes Joins BJP Ahead Of Bengal Polls Paes formally joined the BJP in New Delhi on Tuesday in the presence of senior party leaders, including Union ministers Kiren Rijiju and Sukanta Majumdar. His entry is being seen as politically significant because it comes at a time when the BJP is trying to strengthen its public appeal in West Bengal before the state election. Leander Paes Begins Political Journey Speaking after joining the party, Paes said he had spent around 40 years playing for India and was now stepping into a new field to contribute to the country. He also described the move as a major chance to work for India’s youth. The 51-year-old brings with him a high-profile sporting legacy that includes multiple Grand Slam titles and Olympic representation for India. BJP Looks To Add Star Power In West Bengal Paes’s political entry is likely to be used by the BJP as part of its broader outreach strategy in West Bengal, where celebrity faces and public personalities often play an important role during election campaigns. His popularity, especially as a national sports icon with roots in Kolkata, could help the party build visibility among younger and urban voters.
