Education reform activist Sonam Wangchuk has announced that he will begin an indefinite hunger strike at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar from Sunday, June 28, if the Centre does not respond to his demands on education reforms and Ladakh-related issues. Sonam Wangchuk Hunger Strike At Jantar Mantar Wangchuk said he would join the ongoing protest at Jantar Mantar if the government failed to take responsibility for concerns related to education, Ladakh’s environment and the region’s cultural identity. In a video message recorded near the United Nations office in Geneva, Wangchuk said he had returned to review whether the issues raised before his visit to Switzerland had been addressed. He said he would sit on an indefinite fast if there was no meaningful response by the end of Saturday. Ladakh Environment And Cultural Concerns Wangchuk has repeatedly raised concerns about Ladakh’s fragile environment, local identity and the need for stronger safeguards for the region. His latest announcement links those concerns with broader demands for accountability in education reforms. He said even acceptance of one key demand would prevent the need for a hunger strike, indicating that the protest could be avoided if the Centre responded before Sunday. Jantar Mantar Protest Over NEET Irregularities The announcement comes as a separate indefinite protest at Jantar Mantar over alleged irregularities in the NEET examination entered its sixth day. Protesters have demanded accountability from the Union Education Ministry and have refused to leave the site despite directions to vacate. Wangchuk’s planned fast is expected to add further attention to the Jantar Mantar protest, bringing together demands linked to education accountability, Ladakh’s environment and cultural protection.
