KhaledaZia – Bharat Pulse News

Former Bangladesh prime minister and senior opposition leader Khaleda Zia passed away on Tuesday at the age of 80 after a prolonged illness. She died in Dhaka while undergoing treatment for multiple age-related health complications. Zia had been suffering from chronic liver, heart, and respiratory ailments for several years, and her condition had deteriorated in recent weeks despite medical care. Political Career and Leadership Khaleda Zia was Bangladesh’s first female prime minister and one of the most influential political figures in the country’s history. She first assumed office in 1991 following the restoration of parliamentary democracy and later served two more terms, remaining in power until 2006. As chairperson of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, she led the party for decades and played a central role in shaping national politics, economic policy, and Bangladesh’s foreign relations. Rivalry and Final Years Zia’s long-standing political rivalry with Sheikh Hasina defined Bangladesh’s two-party system for years and deeply influenced governance and electoral politics. In her later years, she stayed largely away from active politics due to declining health and prolonged legal challenges, though she continued to be a key symbolic figure for the opposition and her supporters. National Response Condolences poured in from political leaders across party lines, with many acknowledging her contribution to Bangladesh’s democratic evolution. Official arrangements related to her last rites are expected to be announced.
