The Supreme Court has registered a civil writ petition seeking consideration of contempt proceedings against the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) over a social media post targeting Chief Justice of India Surya Kant. The petition, registered on October 30, 2026, follows a complaint by advocate Vineet Jindal questioning whether the party's remarks crossed the boundaries of legitimate political criticism. Supreme Court Registers Petition Against Kerala Congress Jindal submitted his representation to the Chief Justice on October 13, a day after the Kerala Congress published a controversial post on its official X account demanding Surya Kant's resignation. The post suggested that the party could find a replacement for the Chief Justice if he could not handle law-and-order concerns. Although the post was subsequently deleted, Jindal argued that political organisations could not treat a constitutional judicial office as dependent on their approval. The registration does not establish contempt. The court must still examine whether formal proceedings are warranted. Rahul Gandhi's Supreme Court March Also Questioned The complaint also raised concerns about an opposition demonstration near the Supreme Court on October 12, reportedly involving Rahul Gandhi and other INDIA bloc leaders. Jindal requested an examination of possible security breaches and sought preservation of CCTV footage, access-control records and security deployment details. However, he acknowledged that peaceful demonstrations and lawful political slogans do not automatically constitute contempt or criminal misconduct. Kerala Congress Apologises to CJI Surya Kant KPCC president Sunny Joseph tendered an unconditional apology in an October 22 response to a legal notice. Joseph maintained that party worker Vijay Thottathil had published the post without authorisation from the leadership. The worker was subsequently removed from his position. Separately, a Supreme Court Bench had issued notice concerning the October 12 demonstration but declined to initiate contempt proceedings over the post at that stage. The newly registered petition is expected to be considered by the court, which will determine whether further action is necessary.
