HDFC Bank has submitted the names of two candidates to the Reserve Bank of India for appointment as its next Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, formally advancing the succession process ahead of Sashidhar Jagdishan’s retirement in October. HDFC Bank Seeks RBI Approval for New CEO The bank’s board approved two candidates in order of preference and forwarded their names, along with proposed remuneration details, to the RBI. HDFC Bank has not publicly disclosed the identities of either candidate. Under banking regulations, RBI approval is required before a private-sector bank can appoint its MD and CEO. The successful candidate is proposed to serve an initial three-year term. Sashidhar Jagdishan to Retire in October Jagdishan is scheduled to step down on October 26, 2026, after deciding not to seek another term as chief executive. Deputy Managing Director Kaizad Bharucha has been widely regarded as a leading internal contender for the position, although HDFC Bank has not confirmed whether his name is among the two submitted to the regulator. The leadership transition is closely watched because HDFC Bank is India’s largest private-sector lender and is continuing to integrate operations following its merger with parent HDFC Ltd. HDFC Bank Strengthens Senior Leadership Alongside the CEO succession process, the board approved the reappointment of V Srinivasa Rangan as Whole-time Director and Executive Director for one year, subject to regulatory approval. Chief Credit Officer Jimmy Tata has also been proposed as a Whole-time Director for three years. The board additionally approved the creation of another Whole-time Director position, taking the proposed number of Whole-time Directors to four apart from the MD and CEO.
