The Jammu and Kashmir government has cleared a proposal to raise the retirement age of judicial officers from 60 to 62 years, with the change proposed to take effect retrospectively from March 2026. J&K Judicial Officers’ Retirement Age Raised The proposal was approved by the Cabinet headed by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, who also holds the Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs portfolio. Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha has also approved the proposal, according to information emerging from the administration. A formal government order implementing the decision is expected to be issued separately. Once notified, the measure will increase the superannuation age of eligible judicial officers serving in Jammu and Kashmir by two years. Officers Retired Since March May Return The proposal is expected to apply retrospectively from March 2026, potentially allowing judicial officers who retired after that date to return to service. Any continuation beyond the age of 60 is expected to remain subject to suitability and performance assessment by the High Court of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh. The arrangement could therefore affect both serving officers approaching retirement and those who recently superannuated. Supreme Court Had Sought Review of Retirement Age The development follows proceedings before the Supreme Court concerning a proposed nationwide increase in the retirement age of district judiciary officers. The High Court of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh had recommended raising the age to 62, subject to officers being found fit and suitable for continued service. The Supreme Court had subsequently directed several states and Union Territories, including Jammu and Kashmir, to reconsider or take an appropriate decision on increasing the retirement age.
