JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon has described India as probably the fastest-growing economy in the world, while warning that inconsistent taxation, regulatory barriers and uneven application of rules could discourage foreign investment despite the country’s strong growth prospects. He said India had significant opportunities to attract global capital as companies increasingly look towards faster-growing markets. However, he argued that maintaining high growth would require an investment environment in which domestic and foreign companies are able to compete fairly. Taxation and Regulations Could Deter Investment The JPMorgan chief said foreign businesses sometimes face difficulties competing in India because regulations can favour established local companies or be used to restrict competition. Dimon argued that consistent taxation, predictable regulation and stronger governance would encourage international companies to commit more capital to India. His comments underline a wider challenge for India as it seeks to convert rapid economic expansion into sustained foreign direct investment, manufacturing growth and deeper integration with global supply chains. Dimon Backs RBI and India’s Financial Management Dimon also expressed confidence in the Reserve Bank of India as it works to manage currency pressures and strengthen dollar availability through foreign currency deposits. On artificial intelligence, he said the technology would ultimately generate substantial economic returns, although the benefits may emerge differently and over a longer period than investors currently expect. Dimon compared the AI investment cycle with the development of the internet, arguing that the technology’s long-term economic value should not be underestimated despite uncertainty surrounding current valuations.
