US Vice-President JD Vance has accused certain members of the Israeli government of attempting to influence American public opinion and derail Washington’s diplomatic efforts with Iran. Speaking during an extended interview with Joe Rogan, Vance said he trusted some Israeli officials but believed others were supporting a discreet and well-funded campaign designed to keep the conflict continuing indefinitely. Vance Alleges Campaign Against Iran Negotiations Vance claimed that sections of the Israeli establishment were trying to move the United States away from negotiations with Tehran. He said there was evidence that some Israeli leaders strongly opposed the agreement negotiated between Washington and Iran and had attempted to undermine it through efforts aimed at shaping American political opinion. Vance maintained that foreign governments routinely seek to influence US policy. However, he argued that the greater concern arises when American political leaders allow external pressure to affect their judgement and policy recommendations. The Israeli government did not immediately issue a public response to the allegations. White House Acknowledges Foreign Influence Efforts White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said President Donald Trump would recognise that foreign governments regularly attempt to influence American public opinion. Vance has played a significant role in negotiations with Iran, including diplomatic meetings held before the memorandum of understanding was signed. The interim agreement sought to halt military operations, reopen the Strait of Hormuz and establish a 60-day period for negotiations on a broader settlement. However, fighting has since resumed, leaving major parts of the agreement in doubt. Differences Grow Between Washington and Israel The comments reflect increasing public disagreement between Vance and parts of the Israeli government over the future of the Iran conflict. Israel has sought the complete dismantling of Iran’s nuclear and missile programmes and views Tehran as an existential security threat. The Trump administration, meanwhile, has combined military strikes with attempts to negotiate an end to the fighting. Vance has previously warned Israeli leaders against publicly attacking the United States over its diplomatic approach, describing Washington as Israel’s most powerful remaining ally. House Rejects Attempt to Cut Israel Aid The US House of Representatives has separately rejected an amendment seeking to end approximately $3.3 billion in annual military assistance to Israel. The measure failed by 314 votes to 104. However, 103 Democrats supported the proposal, highlighting growing divisions within the party over unconditional military assistance to the Israeli government.
