Jammu Kashmir power tariff hike

The Joint Electricity Regulatory Commission (JERC) for Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh has approved an average 6.83% increase in electricity tariffs for Jammu and Kashmir for 2026-27, triggering sharp political criticism. The revised rates will take effect from September 1, 2026. J&K Power Tariff Hike Set at 6.83% The tariff revision applies to consumers served by the Jammu Power Distribution Corporation Limited and Kashmir Power Distribution Corporation Limited. For metered domestic consumers, the revised energy charge has been fixed at ₹2.45 per unit for consumption up to 200 units, ₹4.20 per unit for 201-400 units and ₹4.60 per unit above 400 units. A fixed charge of ₹10 per kW per month will also apply. The regulator said the two distribution companies faced a significant revenue gap. Their combined annual revenue requirement was assessed at ₹10,275.72 crore, against projected revenue of ₹7,352.87 crore at existing tariffs. Government Subsidy Limits Larger Electricity Hike JERC said meeting the entire revenue gap through consumer tariffs alone would have required an increase of around 40%, creating a much larger burden on households and businesses. The Jammu and Kashmir government has committed ₹2,420.78 crore in subsidy support, allowing the regulator to limit the average tariff increase to 6.83%. Opposition Targets Omar Abdullah Government The tariff decision has drawn criticism from BJP, PDP, Peoples Conference and other political leaders, who have questioned the National Conference government over its 2024 Assembly election promise of providing 200 units of free electricity. Leader of Opposition Sunil Sharma described the hike as a betrayal, while PDP leader Waheed Para and Peoples Conference chief Sajad Lone also criticised the government for increasing electricity costs instead of delivering the promised relief.
