India has formally launched its campaign for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council for the 2028–29 term. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar unveiled the initiative at a special event held at the UN headquarters in New York. India Launches SHANTI Campaign for UNSC Seat India’s campaign is built around the theme “SHANTI”, which stands for Securing Holistic Advancement through Norms, Trust and Integrity. The launch event was attended by diplomats, UN representatives and senior officials. India presented the campaign as an extension of its commitment to multilateral cooperation, international peace and stronger representation for developing countries in global institutions. India previously served as a non-permanent member of the Security Council during the 2021–22 term. India to Contest Asia-Pacific UNSC Seat The election for the 2028–29 term is scheduled to take place in June 2027. India is expected to compete with Tajikistan for the single seat available to the Asia-Pacific Group. A successful campaign would give India another two-year term on the 15-member Security Council. Non-permanent members participate in discussions and voting but do not possess veto powers. India is expected to conduct extensive diplomatic outreach to UN member states ahead of the election. India Renews Call for UNSC Reforms India’s campaign for a non-permanent seat comes alongside its longstanding demand for permanent membership of a reformed Security Council. New Delhi has repeatedly argued that the current structure does not adequately reflect modern geopolitical and economic realities. India supports expanding both the permanent and non-permanent membership categories. The government has maintained that developing countries require stronger representation in global decision-making institutions and that reforms to the Security Council should not be delayed.
