Italy longest-serving government

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s government has become the country’s longest-serving uninterrupted administration since World War II, reaching 1,413 days in office and surpassing the previous record held by Silvio Berlusconi’s government between 2001 and 2005. Meloni Government Sets Post-War Longevity Record Meloni took office in October 2022 after her Brothers of Italy party led a conservative coalition to victory in the general election. Her government has now remained continuously in office longer than any other Italian administration since the establishment of the republic after World War II. Berlusconi’s second government had previously held the record, but a political crisis forced him to resign briefly in 2005 before forming another Cabinet. No Italian government in the country’s post-war republican history has yet completed an entire five-year parliamentary term without interruption. Political Stability Becomes Key Meloni Achievement Italy has historically experienced frequent government changes, making the longevity of Meloni’s coalition particularly notable. Meloni has managed to keep together an alliance that includes Brothers of Italy, the League and Forza Italia despite differences among the parties on some domestic and foreign policy issues. Her supporters point to political stability, falling unemployment, tighter public finances and reduced irregular migrant arrivals as key achievements of the administration. Meloni Faces 2027 Election Test Critics argue that the government’s longevity has not translated into sufficient progress on structural problems including weak productivity, demographic decline, healthcare pressures and stagnant living standards. Italy’s next parliamentary election is due by the end of 2027, when Meloni is expected to seek another term. The longevity milestone strengthens her argument that conservative coalition government can provide stability in a political system traditionally characterised by short-lived administrations.
