Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has claimed that a cargo ship carrying more than 2,500 containers sank after striking a naval mine in the Strait of Hormuz on October 14, 2026. The incident occurred amid escalating attacks on commercial shipping in the strategically important waterway, although independent maritime assessments have not confirmed Iran's explanation for the sinking. Iran Claims Cargo Ship Struck Naval Mine in Hormuz The IRGC Navy said the vessel was travelling through what it described as an unauthorised and dangerous shipping route when it encountered a naval mine. According to Iranian authorities, the explosion triggered a fire that eventually caused the ship to sink in waters south of the Strait of Hormuz. Iranian state media released footage showing a heavily damaged container vessel tilting into the water, with thick smoke rising from the ship. The IRGC also warned nearby vessels and fishermen about floating containers that could pose navigational hazards. Singapore Confirms Container Ship Sinking Singapore's Maritime and Port Authority separately confirmed that the Singapore-flagged container ship GFS Pride sank after sustaining damage from a projectile strike and catching fire. All 21 crew members were safely evacuated. However, the Iranian claim that a naval mine caused the sinking remains unverified. Maritime security reports indicated that commercial vessels had also been struck by unidentified projectiles. Strait of Hormuz Shipping Attacks Intensify The sinking comes amid a sharp escalation in maritime attacks linked to the continuing conflict involving Iran, the United States and Israel. Another commercial vessel, the Antigua and Barbuda-flagged Cape Dao, also sank after sustaining damage in an earlier attack. The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the world's most important energy transportation corridors, connecting Gulf oil producers with international markets. Continued attacks have raised concerns about maritime security, shipping insurance costs and disruptions to global oil supplies.
