IRGC commercial shipping attacks

Iran has intensified attacks on commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz, adopting new military tactics aimed at disrupting global oil supplies and maintaining pressure on the United States ahead of its November 3 midterm elections. Two senior Iranian officials said Tehran's strategy seeks to prevent a decline in oil prices while strengthening its negotiating position against Washington. Iran Expands Strait of Hormuz Shipping Attacks Iran has restricted maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz since US-Israeli military strikes began on February 28, 2026. The strategic waterway previously handled approximately one-fifth of global oil and liquefied natural gas trade. Iranian officials said the country began modifying the frequency and methods of attacks around 10 days ago. Maritime security assessments recorded at least five incidents involving commercial vessels within 48 hours, including drone strikes near the vital shipping corridor. Iranian Forces Adopt New Naval Tactics A US military official confirmed that Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has increasingly deployed unarmed observers aboard small vessels to identify potential targets following extensive damage to Iranian radar systems. American forces recently destroyed one such vessel after identifying its involvement in surveillance operations. No casualties were reported. Iranian officials also indicated plans to expand operations into the Gulf of Oman and waters near Qatar and the United Arab Emirates. Tehran Seeks Economic Pressure Before US Elections Iranian officials acknowledged that maintaining elevated global oil prices was intended to complicate President Trump's economic position ahead of the congressional elections. The United States has maintained sanctions and a naval blockade targeting Iranian ports while pursuing negotiations to end the conflict. One Iranian official warned that Tehran could eventually prevent all vessels violating its restrictions from passing through Hormuz. The US Navy-led Joint Maritime Information Center continues to classify threats against merchant shipping in the region as severe.
