Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps has claimed that its naval forces fired warning shots at four commercial vessels attempting to pass through the Strait of Hormuz, forcing them to change course. IRGC Stops Four Hormuz Vessels The IRGC said the encounters occurred during the previous 24 hours in the southern section of the strategically important waterway. According to its statement, the vessels were attempting to use what Tehran described as an “illegal and unsafe” transit route. Iranian forces reportedly fired warning shots after the ships continued towards the southern corridor. The four vessels subsequently altered their routes, the IRGC claimed. No details were released about the names, ownership, flags, cargoes or destinations of the ships. There were also no immediate reports of injuries, damage or detentions resulting from the encounters. Iran Challenges Southern Shipping Route Iran has objected to vessels travelling along a route close to Oman’s coastline, maintaining that the corridor is unsafe amid the ongoing regional conflict. Tehran wants commercial ships to use routes under Iranian supervision and comply with its requirements for passage. The Iranian account of the latest incidents could not be independently verified. Maritime authorities and the operators of the four vessels had not immediately confirmed the encounters. The development followed several recent incidents involving merchant ships and oil tankers around the strait. Strait of Hormuz Shipping Tensions The Strait of Hormuz connects the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman and is one of the world’s most important energy corridors. Under normal conditions, around one-fifth of globally traded oil and gas passes through the waterway. Continuing military activity has prompted shipping companies to reconsider transit plans, while insurance and freight costs have risen sharply. Further restrictions or attacks could disrupt energy supplies and increase pressure on international oil prices.
