The measures focus on military procurement, cyber activities, shipping and oil-related networks. Washington has also warned foreign businesses and governments that continued economic engagement with sanctioned Iranian entities could expose them to additional penalties. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has described the initiative as a major financial offensive aimed at restricting Iran’s access to international markets and revenue. Tehran Warns of Retaliation Against Economic Pressure Iranian officials have responded by threatening retaliation against countries that actively participate in Washington’s sanctions campaign. Tehran continues to rely heavily on economic relationships with countries including China and Russia as it attempts to limit the impact of US restrictions. The latest confrontation comes amid continued tension surrounding Iranian oil exports and the Strait of Hormuz, with both sides signalling that economic pressure will remain a central part of their wider strategic confrontation.
