South African jurist Navanethem “Navi” Pillay has won the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize for her efforts to promote peace and international law, with the Nobel Committee highlighting her decades-long work in human rights, international justice and accountability. Navi Pillay Wins 2026 Nobel Peace Prize Pillay, 85, is a former judge of the International Criminal Court and the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda, as well as a former United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights. The Nobel Committee said the international legal order is under growing pressure and praised Pillay’s career-long commitment to defending legal frameworks, human rights and accountability. The prize is worth 12 million Swedish crowns, approximately $1.2 million, and will be formally presented in Oslo on December 10. Indian-Origin Jurist Built Global Human Rights Career Born in Durban to a family of Indian Tamil origin, Pillay became the first woman to open a law practice in Natal in 1967 and later became the first non-white woman to serve on South Africa’s High Court. Her legal career began during apartheid, when she represented political activists and challenged discriminatory practices. She later moved into international judicial and human rights roles, becoming one of the most prominent figures in global rights law. Gaza Inquiry Also Part of Pillay’s Recent Work Pillay chaired a UN commission investigating the Occupied Palestinian Territory and Israel. The commission concluded last year that Israel had committed genocide in Gaza, a finding rejected by Israel. The Nobel Committee said Pillay had consistently sought to hold states and political leaders accountable while defending victims of violence and conflict. Her selection places international law and the rules-based global order at the centre of the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize.
