The Directorate General of Maritime Administration has advised shipping companies not to deploy Indian seafarers on vessels scheduled to travel through the Strait of Hormuz. The precautionary directive follows recent attacks on commercial ships amid worsening security conditions in West Asia. Indian Sailors Face Hormuz Restrictions The advisory applies to shipowners, ship managers and Recruitment and Placement Service Licence companies responsible for employing Indian seafarers. These companies have been asked to avoid assigning Indian crew members to vessels expected to pass through the Strait of Hormuz until further notice. The maritime regulator said the measure was necessary because of the increased danger to commercial shipping and crew members operating in the region. The Strait of Hormuz connects the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman and remains one of the world’s most important maritime routes for oil and gas shipments. Vessel Attacks Raise Crew Safety Concerns The directive followed attacks on two vessels carrying a combined crew of 46 people, including 30 Indian seafarers. Several crew members were injured, prompting Indian diplomatic officials to provide assistance to those receiving treatment. The incidents have intensified concerns over the safety of sailors deployed aboard vessels moving through conflict-affected waters. Indian authorities are also monitoring the location and welfare of seafarers serving aboard Indian and foreign-flagged ships in the region. Shipping Companies Told to Remain Vigilant Masters of vessels operating in the Persian Gulf, the Strait of Hormuz and adjoining waters have been instructed to maintain heightened security vigilance. Shipping companies must continuously monitor navigational warnings, government advisories and regional security developments. They have also been advised to review voyage plans and ensure that emergency procedures, communication systems and essential supplies remain available aboard their vessels. The deployment restriction will remain in place until the maritime authorities issue further instructions.
