The Indian Space Research Organisation has rejected concerns that greater private-sector participation will weaken or privatise the agency, saying the reforms are intended to expand India’s space ecosystem while allowing ISRO to concentrate on advanced technologies and strategic missions. ISRO Rejects Privatisation Concerns ISRO said it would remain India’s principal institution for advanced space research, technology development, national and strategic missions, space science and exploration. The clarification followed concerns raised by employee associations over the transfer of mature manufacturing and operational activities to private companies and public sector undertakings. ISRO described suggestions that its importance would be diminished as incorrect. The agency said reforms introduced since 2020 and the Indian Space Policy 2023 should be viewed as “ecosystem expansion and capability multiplication” rather than privatisation. Private Firms to Scale Mature Space Technologies Under the evolving model, industry and PSUs can increasingly manufacture mature launch vehicles, routine satellites and other established systems through competitive processes. ISRO said this would free scientific manpower and resources for frontier research, human spaceflight, next-generation launch systems, deep-space missions and strategic national capabilities. The agency stressed that ownership and control of critical national space infrastructure and strategic capabilities would remain with the government. ISRO Focuses on Moon Mission and Space Station ISRO said its future priorities include establishing the Bharatiya Antariksh Station by 2035 and undertaking an Indian crewed mission to the Moon by 2040, alongside reusable launch systems and sustained planetary exploration. India’s space economy is currently estimated at around $8.4 billion, with a target of reaching $44 billion by 2033. ISRO said achieving that scale would require private investment, industrial capacity and wider market participation alongside government resources.
