Former Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) Director General David Petraeus has urged India to rapidly modernise its military strategy to address evolving threats from China and Pakistan. Speaking at the World Summit 2026 in New Delhi on Friday, October 23, Petraeus described the possibility of a two-front conflict as India's biggest security challenge and emphasised the growing importance of artificial intelligence, autonomous weapons and advanced battlefield technologies. Ex-CIA Chief Warns India of China-Pakistan Threat Petraeus, who served more than 37 years in the US military, said India needed to develop a new approach to warfare suited to its particular security environment. He explained that military lessons from the Russia-Ukraine war could not be applied uniformly across different regions. Instead, strategies must account for specific operational conditions, including high-altitude warfare, air operations and ground combat. Petraeus warned that military methods effective in previous conflicts might prove inadequate against rapidly adapting adversaries. He emphasised the importance of integrating unmanned systems, advanced surveillance and new operational tactics into military planning. For India, such developments could influence preparations for potential confrontations along the Himalayan border and other sensitive regions. Artificial Intelligence Could Transform India's Defence Petraeus predicted that increasingly sophisticated large language models could transform military command structures and decision-making. He suggested that AI-powered agents could eventually function as continuously available staff officers, processing intelligence and supporting commanders. Autonomous systems could also combine information from radar networks, acoustic sensors and other surveillance technologies to improve air and ballistic missile defence. His remarks highlighted the need for military forces to adapt their equipment, training and operational doctrines as artificial intelligence reshapes modern warfare.
