Prime Minister Narendra Modi has highlighted the expansion of India's operational metro rail network from 248 kilometres in 2014 to nearly 1,200 kilometres in 2026, describing it as a major transformation in urban transportation. Speaking on November 3 while inaugurating Pune Metro Line 3 through video conferencing, Modi said improved public transport infrastructure would strengthen economic growth and make commuting easier for millions of urban residents. Metro Services Expand From Five Cities to 26 Modi said metro rail services were available in only five Indian cities in 2014, compared with 26 cities today. According to the Prime Minister, more than one crore passengers now use metro services daily, placing India's network among the three largest globally. He credited sustained infrastructure investment and improved project execution for the expansion, saying efficient urban transportation reduces commuting time and improves productivity. PM Modi Inaugurates Pune Metro's 23-Km Pink Line The Prime Minister inaugurated Pune Metro Line 3, also known as the Pink Line, developed at a cost exceeding Rs 8,300 crore. The 23-kilometre corridor connects the Hinjewadi information technology hub with the District Court Metro station. The project is expected to benefit thousands of IT professionals by reducing traffic congestion and dependence on private vehicles. The corridor will be operated by women personnel, while solar energy is expected to meet approximately 30% of its electricity requirements. Pune Metro Phase-II to Receive Rs 13,500 Crore Investment Modi also laid the foundation stone for four additional corridors under Pune Metro Phase-II, involving an estimated investment of Rs 13,500 crore. The proposed Lines 2A, 2B, 4 and 4A will connect important residential, commercial and employment centres. Together, the newly inaugurated line and proposed expansion represent investments worth approximately Rs 21,800 crore. Modi said Maharashtra's expanding metro network would create employment, encourage industrial activity and support the development of more efficient urban centres.
