India’s long-delayed plan to create integrated theatre commands is reportedly nearing a crucial decision, nearly two decades after military restructuring was first seriously discussed. The proposal aims to place Army, Navy and Air Force assets under unified commanders for specific operational regions. India Theatre Command Plan Nears Decision The latest proposal is expected to be presented to Defence Minister Rajnath Singh after Kargil Vijay Diwas later in July. It would then require approval from the Ministry of Defence and the Cabinet Committee on Security. The broad structure has reportedly been finalised, although discussions continue over the distribution of personnel, resources and operational authority between the three services and the proposed theatre commanders. Approval would mark one of the most significant restructurings of India’s armed forces since Independence. Three Integrated Commands Proposed The current plan reportedly envisages three integrated commands. A northern command would focus on the border with China, while a western command would handle security challenges involving Pakistan. A maritime command would oversee India’s coastlines, surrounding waters and wider naval interests. Each command is expected to integrate relevant land, air and naval capabilities under a single four-star commander. The new structure is designed to enable faster decisions and coordinated military responses across land, sea, air, cyber and space domains. Service Chiefs and Theatre Commanders Under the proposed system, the service chiefs would remain responsible for recruiting, training and equipping their respective forces. Theatre commanders would control the deployment and use of those forces during operations. Determining the precise division of authority remains one of the main issues awaiting resolution. Even after government approval, implementation is expected to take several years as personnel are reassigned, new headquarters are established and operational doctrines are revised.
