Markets are increasingly pricing in an interest rate hike by the Reserve Bank of India this week as inflation broadens beyond food and fuel, economic growth remains strong and major global central banks adopt a tighter monetary stance. RBI Rate Hike Bets Rise Ahead of MPC Decision Nearly 60% of economists expect the RBI to raise the repo rate by 25 basis points at its upcoming policy decision, taking the benchmark rate from 5.25% to 5.50%. If delivered, it would be the RBI’s first rate increase in nearly four years. The central bank had cut rates by a cumulative 125 basis points during 2025 before holding the repo rate at 5.25%. Market expectations are even stronger, with swap markets effectively pricing in a rate increase this week. Inflation Broadens Beyond Food and Fuel Consumer inflation rose to 4.82% in August, remaining above the RBI’s 4% medium-term target for a third consecutive month. Price pressures have also become more broad-based, with nearly half of the consumer inflation basket recording increases at or above the central bank’s target. At the same time, India’s economy expanded 7.8% in the April-June quarter, giving policymakers greater room to tighten rates without immediately undermining growth. Markets Price Further RBI Tightening Investors are also betting that this week’s potential increase may not be the last. Swap markets are pricing roughly 100 basis points of additional tightening over the next 12 months, although economist forecasts vary significantly. A decision to keep rates unchanged could put additional pressure on the rupee and longer-term government bonds, while the RBI’s inflation forecasts and policy guidance will be closely watched for clues about future rate increases.
