The India-European Union Free Trade Agreement (FTA) could become operational in early 2027, Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal said on Thursday, October 22, 2026. Speaking during his visit to Germany, Goyal indicated that the agreement could be signed before December 2026 and implemented within the following four to five months, creating new opportunities for Indian exporters and European businesses. India-EU Free Trade Agreement Nears Implementation Goyal said negotiations for the India-EU FTA, which lasted nearly two decades, were concluded on January 27, 2026. The agreement is now progressing towards formal signing and completion of the necessary approval procedures. Under the proposed arrangement, approximately 93% of Indian shipments will receive duty-free access to the 27-member European Union market. European exports, including luxury automobiles and wines, will also benefit from reduced Indian import tariffs. Piyush Goyal Urges Businesses to Prepare for FTA Leading a 100-member Indian business delegation to Germany, Goyal encouraged companies to establish commercial partnerships before the agreement becomes operational. He urged manufacturers and exporters to exchange product samples, clarify quality requirements, negotiate prices and identify potential customers. The minister highlighted opportunities in advanced manufacturing, engineering, green technology and skilled workforce development. India-Germany Trade Target Set at €310 Billion Goyal proposed an ambitious target of increasing bilateral trade between India and Germany from approximately €31 billion to €310 billion. He emphasised the complementary strengths of Germany's precision engineering and industrial expertise and India's digital capabilities, infrastructure and skilled workforce. The two countries are also exploring cooperation in artificial intelligence, semiconductors, critical minerals and renewable energy. The proposed FTA is expected to strengthen commercial relations between India and the European Union, although its implementation remains subject to the completion of formal procedures.
