Indian Air Force Chief Air Chief Marshal A.P. Singh has said Pakistan’s reported collaboration with China on fifth-generation fighter aircraft is a concern for India, but stressed that the IAF currently possesses the capabilities needed to counter the threat. IAF Flags Pakistan-China Fifth-Generation Fighter Plans Speaking ahead of Air Force Day, Singh said reports suggest Pakistan could acquire Chinese fifth-generation fighter aircraft in the near future and that Pakistani pilots may already be undergoing training in China. He said the development required close attention but cautioned against judging military capability solely by the sophistication of an individual aircraft. Singh argued that the effectiveness of any fighter platform depends on how well it is integrated with sensors, weapons, command networks and other assets across the wider military system. AP Singh Says India Can Counter Current Threat The IAF Chief said India’s existing and incoming platforms, if properly integrated, should be capable of dealing with the emerging threat in the near term. He referred to Operation Sindoor to argue that possessing advanced platforms alone does not automatically translate into battlefield effectiveness. At the same time, Singh stressed that India cannot afford prolonged delays in inducting fifth-generation fighter aircraft. AMCA and Fighter Induction Become Key Priority Singh called for acceleration of India’s indigenous Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft programme and said alternative options may have to be considered if AMCA faces significant delays. Russia has offered the Su-57 fifth-generation fighter to India, although no decision has been taken. The IAF is also pursuing additional fighter acquisitions and needs around 36 to 40 new aircraft annually over the coming years to strengthen its combat squadron strength.
