Promotion and relegation would be implemented, allowing teams to ascend or descend based on their performances in the league cycle. The objective is to sustain the relevance of Test cricket by fostering more meaningful matches and reducing mismatches between stronger and weaker teams. Reactions from Member Boards Key stakeholders, including the BCCI, ECB, and CA, have reportedly expressed cautious optimism about the proposal. “While the structure aims to boost the quality and competitiveness of Test cricket, ensuring inclusivity for lower-ranked teams remains crucial,” remarked an ICC insider. Some cricket boards, however, have voiced concerns over the potential reduction in opportunities for teams in the second tier. These boards have stressed the need for financial and infrastructural support to ensure the system benefits all participants. Challenges and Benefits Implementing the two-tier system presents logistical challenges, including scheduling complexities and maintaining a balance between Test cricket and other formats like T20 leagues. However, proponents believe the system could breathe new life into the longest format of the game by generating greater spectator interest and viewership.
