A threatened Houthi blockade of Saudi shipping through the Bab el-Mandeb Strait could push global oil prices sharply higher, although alternative pipelines and longer maritime routes may reduce the overall supply disruption. Houthi Red Sea Blockade Threat Yemen’s Iran-aligned Houthi movement declared a maritime embargo against Saudi Arabia, raising concerns over shipments passing through the narrow gateway connecting the Red Sea with the Gulf of Aden. The practical effect remains uncertain because the Houthis have not explained how the blockade will be enforced. However, even limited attacks or threats against commercial vessels could persuade tanker operators to avoid the area because of security and insurance risks. The development comes as Saudi Arabia increasingly relies on its Red Sea export terminal at Yanbu following disruptions affecting tanker traffic through the Strait of Hormuz. Oil Prices Could Rise Sharply A successful blockade could disrupt millions of barrels of daily oil shipments. Analysts estimate that roughly three million barrels per day of Saudi crude could require rerouting, particularly supplies destined for Asian markets. Under a severe disruption scenario, crude prices could rise to between $115 and $120 per barrel. Higher transportation and insurance costs could also increase prices for diesel, aviation fuel and other refined products. Any sustained increase would add inflationary pressure and raise energy costs for oil-importing economies. Alternative Oil Shipping Routes Saudi crude could be redirected around Africa’s Cape of Good Hope, although this would extend some journeys by several weeks and require additional tankers. Egypt’s SUMED pipeline offers another alternative for moving oil between the Red Sea and the Mediterranean. These options could prevent a complete halt in supplies but have capacity and logistical constraints. Markets would therefore likely experience an immediate price shock before alternative arrangements eased some pressure. Oil prices initially rose moderately after the Houthi announcement as traders assessed whether the threatened blockade would be implemented.
