Strait of Hormuz Deal Nears Iran and Oman are discussing a maritime arrangement that could permit ships to enter the Persian Gulf through an Iranian-controlled lane and exit through waters managed by Oman. The proposal reportedly includes charges for security and environmental services. Washington has opposed any arrangement that allows Iran to impose tolls or exercise exclusive authority over an international shipping route. US officials insist that vessels must receive free and safe passage without political conditions. Iran maintains that its negotiations are directly with Oman rather than the United States. Tehran has also linked a permanent reopening to an end to American military operations and restrictions affecting Iranian ports. Hormuz Tensions Impact Global Oil Markets The Strait of Hormuz carries about one-fifth of global oil supplies during normal conditions. Restrictions and attacks on commercial vessels have sharply reduced traffic, disrupted energy shipments and increased pressure on oil-importing countries. Reports of progress in the negotiations pushed oil prices lower and lifted global financial markets. US officials indicated that reopening the strait would form the first stage of a wider agreement, with Iran’s nuclear programme and a possible end to the conflict addressed in subsequent negotiations.
