Hasina extradition – Bharat Pulse News

In a major escalation of legal proceedings, Bangladesh's National Central Bureau has formally requested Interpol to issue a red corner notice against former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and 11 of her close aides. The request is aimed at securing their provisional arrest and possible extradition over a series of serious allegations, including mass murder, inciting civil war, and crimes against humanity. The move follows a series of arrest warrants issued by the country’s International Crimes Tribunal, which is probing the deaths of over 600 people during widespread student-led protests in July 2024. The violent protests ultimately led to Hasina’s resignation and her reported relocation to India in early August of that year. Serious Charges and Political Fallout Sheikh Hasina currently faces over 100 criminal cases ranging from corruption and abuse of power to charges of genocide. The interim government in Bangladesh, led by Muhammad Yunus, has made it a top priority to investigate and prosecute individuals accused of undermining the nation’s democracy and violating human rights under the previous regime. The red corner notice, if approved by Interpol, would alert member countries to locate and temporarily detain the listed individuals, paving the way for extradition proceedings. However, the process could be complicated due to the lack of an extradition treaty between Bangladesh and India, where Hasina is believed to be residing. Legal and Diplomatic Implications This development has the potential to not only shake the political landscape within Bangladesh but also strain diplomatic relations with neighboring India. While the interim administration frames its actions as a push for justice and accountability, critics have questioned whether the proceedings could also be politically motivated. Nonetheless, the legal machinery appears to be moving swiftly, with the government vowing to bring all those responsible for past violence and administrative misconduct to justice. The international community remains watchful, as the issuance—or rejection—of the red corner notice will have far-reaching implications for regional politics, legal precedent, and Bangladesh’s ongoing transition away from Hasina’s long-standing rule. As events unfold, all eyes are now on Interpol's decision and how India responds to the growing international and legal pressure surrounding one of South Asia’s most controversial political figures.
