Bangladesh President Mohammed Shahabuddin has resigned midway through his five-year term, bringing an early end to the tenure of one of the last senior officials associated with ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina. Mohammed Shahabuddin Resigns as President Shahabuddin submitted his signed resignation to Parliament Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmad following the latter’s early return from medical treatment in Thailand. The resignation became effective upon its submission under Bangladesh’s Constitution. Shahabuddin had served as the country’s largely ceremonial head of state since April 2023. Although his term was scheduled to continue until 2028, he previously indicated that he wanted to leave office after parliamentary elections restored an elected government. Sheikh Hasina Return Raises Political Tensions The resignation follows Hasina’s announcement that she and senior Awami League figures plan to return from exile in India and surrender to Bangladeshi authorities. Hasina was sentenced to death in absentia over the deadly crackdown on student-led demonstrations that preceded her removal in 2024. She denies the allegations and maintains that she and her political supporters have faced systematic repression. Shahabuddin was elected as the Awami League’s nominee and remained president after Hasina fled Bangladesh. Reports indicated that the BNP-led government had pressed him to step aside because of his longstanding political association with the former prime minister, although no official reason accompanied his resignation. Bangladesh Begins Presidential Transition Under Article 54 of the Constitution, Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmad is expected to perform the president’s duties until Parliament elects a replacement. A new president must be elected by members of Parliament within 90 days of the office becoming vacant. The transition comes months after Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s Bangladesh Nationalist Party secured a decisive victory in the February general election.
