US President Donald Trump has announced that large-scale oil, gas and mineral exploration is being prepared in Greenland, highlighting the Arctic island's potential natural resources and strategic importance. His statement on October 14, 2026, follows a recent security agreement between Washington, Denmark and Greenland aimed at expanding American military cooperation in the region. Trump Announces Greenland Oil and Gas Exploration In a post on Truth Social, President Trump claimed that Greenland possesses some of the world's largest easily accessible oil reserves, citing unnamed experts. However, he did not provide details about participating companies, investment commitments, exploration licences or when operations would begin. Greenland, a self-governing territory within the Kingdom of Denmark, has substantial mineral deposits. Extracting these resources remains challenging because of the island's harsh Arctic climate, limited infrastructure and extensive ice coverage. US-Greenland Security Agreement Expands Military Presence The announcement follows a September agreement between the United States, Denmark and Greenland that provides for expanded American military facilities and defence cooperation. The arrangement includes provisions for additional military bases and cooperation involving mineral resources and economic development. Importantly, the agreement recognises Danish sovereignty and Greenlanders' right to self-determination. It does not grant Washington ownership of Greenland or unrestricted rights to its natural resources. Greenland's Rare Earth Minerals Draw US Interest Greenland contains deposits of rare earth elements used in electric vehicles, electronics, renewable energy equipment and advanced defence technologies. Washington has increasingly prioritised access to critical minerals as it seeks to reduce dependence on Chinese-controlled supply chains. President Trump also emphasised Greenland's strategic location for missile detection and defence across the Arctic and North Atlantic. Despite the announcement, significant uncertainty remains over the commercial viability, environmental approvals and timing of any major resource exploration projects.
