The annual expenditure on renovation, furnishing and repairs of official residences occupied by Union ministers in Delhi rose to a record ₹92.35 crore in 2025-26, according to information disclosed through the Right to Information Act. The figure is more than three times the ₹27.47 crore spent in 2014-15. Union Ministers’ Home Repairs Cost ₹92.35 Crore The Central Public Works Department, which handles renovation and maintenance of these government residences, spent a cumulative ₹547.68 crore between 2014-15 and 2025-26. Annual expenditure has risen sharply in recent years. Spending stood at ₹53.87 crore in 2020-21, ₹73.86 crore in 2022-23, ₹71.98 crore in 2024-25 and reached its highest level of ₹92.35 crore in 2025-26. With the Union Council of Ministers generally comprising around 70 to 72 Cabinet ministers and ministers of state, the latest expenditure works out to roughly ₹1.2 crore per minister on average, although actual spending varies significantly between individual residences. Ageing Lutyens Bungalows Drive Maintenance Costs Many ministerial residences in Delhi’s Lutyens Bungalow Zone are between 80 and 100 years old, creating substantial maintenance requirements. Officials have cited seepage, termite infestation, ageing electrical systems and plumbing problems among the recurring issues. Regular work can also include replacement of fans, LED lights, flooring and other fixtures. Inflation and the large compounds surrounding many colonial-era bungalows have also contributed to rising maintenance costs. CPWD Data Excludes MPs and Ministerial Offices The disclosed expenditure covers official residences occupied by Union ministers but does not include spending on homes allotted to Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha MPs who are not ministers. It also excludes expenditure on ministerial offices, meaning the ₹547.68 crore cumulative figure relates specifically to repair, renovation and furnishing work at ministers’ residences.
