Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said BRICS will continue to move forward through consensus and cooperation rather than positioning itself against any country, as he opened the 18th BRICS Summit at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi. Modi Says BRICS Is Built on Consensus Welcoming leaders from the expanded grouping, Modi said BRICS had established a distinct identity on the global stage over the past two decades. He stressed that the grouping’s approach was based on consensus, mutual respect and cooperation among member countries rather than confrontation with other nations or international blocs. The remarks come amid growing debate over whether the expanded BRICS grouping could emerge as a counterweight to Western-led institutions. Resilience and Innovation Shape India’s BRICS Agenda Modi highlighted resilience, innovation, cooperation and sustainability as central priorities for the summit. India has sought to use its 2026 BRICS presidency to deepen collaboration across trade, technology, development, supply chains and reform of global institutions while amplifying the priorities of emerging economies and the Global South. The Prime Minister has also repeatedly argued that geopolitical disputes should be resolved through dialogue and diplomacy. Expanded BRICS Gains Greater Global Influence The New Delhi summit brings together leaders from 11 full BRICS members along with partner countries, reflecting the rapid expansion of the grouping in recent years. BRICS now represents a substantial share of the world’s population, economic output and international trade, giving its decisions increasing significance in debates over global economic governance. The summit is expected to address trade, development finance, technology, energy security and major geopolitical challenges as members seek common positions despite differing national interests.
