India on Tuesday welcomed the U.S.-Iran Memorandum of Understanding, with National Security Advisor Ajit Doval saying the agreement could support global energy security, ease supply chain disruptions and improve maritime stability in West Asia. India Welcomes US-Iran MoU Speaking at the 16th BRICS National Security Advisers’ meeting in New Delhi, Doval said India viewed the U.S.-Iran understanding with “cautious optimism” and hoped the agreement would work. He said the MoU could help reduce geopolitical uncertainty and support stability in global markets. India’s response is significant because New Delhi has major energy, trade and diaspora interests in West Asia, and any escalation in the region directly affects crude oil prices, shipping routes and commodity supplies. Strait Of Hormuz And Energy Security Doval said the opening and stable functioning of the Strait of Hormuz would be a welcome development for global energy security. The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most important maritime routes for oil and gas movement. Any disruption in the waterway can affect crude oil supplies, freight costs and energy prices for major import-dependent countries, including India. He also said improved access through the route could help remove supply chain bottlenecks for key commodities, including fertilisers and chemicals. BRICS NSA Meeting In Delhi The comments were made during the BRICS security meeting chaired by Doval. Senior security officials from BRICS countries, including Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, Russian Security Council Secretary Sergei Shoigu and Iran’s Ghadir Nezamipour, attended the meeting. Doval also highlighted the need for BRICS countries to play a larger role in addressing geopolitical uncertainty, economic stress and security challenges affecting the Global South.
