Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has reportedly apologised to the Indian government over child sexual abuse material, deepfakes and other harmful content appearing across Meta-owned platforms. The apology followed increased scrutiny of Facebook and Instagram by Indian authorities. Zuckerberg Apologises Over Meta Content According to people familiar with the discussions, Zuckerberg acknowledged concerns about child sexual abuse material and operational failures in Meta’s content-moderation systems. The reported apology came after a series of meetings between Indian officials and senior company representatives. Meta reiterated that it maintains zero tolerance for child sexual exploitation and is strengthening systems designed to identify, block and remove illegal content. Zuckerberg has not issued a separate public statement detailing the apology. India Investigates Child Abuse Content The National Commission for Protection of Child Rights has initiated an inquiry into allegations that advertisements linked to child sexual exploitative and abuse material appeared on Meta platforms. The Centre had earlier directed Meta to remove such material from Instagram and explain how it was allowed to circulate. Government concerns also covered deepfake content, algorithmic recommendations and whether paid promotional tools were being misused to increase the reach of illegal posts. Indian authorities have demanded stronger detection systems, faster removal procedures and greater accountability from Meta executives. Meta Faces Wider India Scrutiny The development comes amid a separate controversy involving the temporary restriction of a Facebook post by PM Modi. Meta attributed that incident to an operational error, restored the post and apologised to the government through its chief global affairs officer, Joel Kaplan. India has tightened its digital-content rules, reducing the time available to platforms for removing certain categories of flagged illegal material. The government has warned that intermediaries could face legal consequences and lose statutory protections if they fail to meet compliance requirements. Meta has said it remains committed to following Indian law and improving safeguards across Facebook and Instagram.
