Facebook addictive design allegations

Meta Platforms is facing one of the biggest legal challenges in its history as a major US trial examines allegations that Facebook and Instagram were deliberately designed to keep children and teenagers engaged despite potential mental-health risks. Theoretical penalties in the case could reach as high as $1.4 trillion, although an award of that scale is considered unlikely. Meta Faces $1.4 Trillion Youth Safety Case A bipartisan group of US states is pursuing claims against Meta over the design and operation of Facebook and Instagram. The states allege that features such as likes, infinite scrolling and recommendation algorithms were designed to maximise engagement among younger users while Meta allegedly downplayed or misrepresented potential safety risks. Meta has denied the allegations and maintains that it has invested heavily in protections, parental controls and safety tools for teenage users. Facebook and Instagram Could Face Major Changes If Meta is found liable, the consequences could extend well beyond financial penalties. Possible remedies could include stronger age-verification systems, restrictions on infinite scrolling and engagement features for younger users, tighter usage controls and additional safeguards designed to prevent children under 13 from accessing the platforms. Any final operational restrictions would depend on the court’s findings and subsequent remedies. Meta Disputes Scale of Potential Penalties The widely reported $1.4 trillion figure represents a theoretical maximum calculated under consumer-protection laws rather than a guaranteed financial penalty. A significantly smaller penalty remains possible if Meta is found liable. The case could nevertheless have major implications for how Facebook, Instagram and other social media platforms design products for younger users, potentially influencing future regulation across the technology industry.
