Wildfires sweeping through southwestern France and central Spain have forced more than 166,000 people to leave their homes and holiday destinations. Later official estimates indicated the number of people evacuated or placed under protective restrictions had crossed 200,000 as fires continued to spread. The Cap Ferret peninsula, a major Atlantic tourist destination near Bordeaux, was evacuated as flames approached its limited road access. Spain Declares Wildfire Emergency Spain declared a national wildfire emergency as multiple blazes spread near Madrid and across neighbouring Ávila province. Tens of thousands of residents were evacuated or instructed to remain indoors as smoke affected populated areas. Two major fires west of Madrid reportedly merged, increasing pressure on firefighters battling difficult terrain, strong winds and extremely dry vegetation. Spain deployed emergency personnel, military units and water-dropping aircraft to contain the flames. European Nations Send Firefighting Support France and Spain received aerial firefighting support from several European countries after requesting international assistance. Water-bombing aircraft and helicopters were dispatched to reinforce domestic operations. High temperatures, prolonged dry conditions and powerful winds have accelerated the spread of the fires. Authorities warned that conditions could remain dangerous, while emergency teams continued monitoring affected communities and arranging temporary accommodation for displaced residents.
