Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has again raised the Kashmir issue at the United Nations General Assembly, calling for disputes in South Asia to be resolved through dialogue under the UN Charter and relevant resolutions. India has consistently rejected third-party involvement in matters concerning Jammu and Kashmir. Erdogan Calls for Dialogue on Kashmir Addressing the 81st UN General Assembly in New York, Erdogan said all disputes in South Asia, including Kashmir, should be addressed through dialogue. The remarks continue Türkiye’s longstanding position on the issue. Erdogan has referred to Kashmir during several previous UNGA addresses, including in 2025, when he similarly called for a resolution through dialogue and UN mechanisms. India has repeatedly objected to such interventions, maintaining that Jammu and Kashmir is an integral part of the country and that outstanding issues with Pakistan must be handled bilaterally. India Rejects Third-Party Mediation on Kashmir New Delhi’s position remains that no foreign country or international intermediary has a role in resolving India-Pakistan bilateral issues. India has pointed to the 1972 Shimla Agreement, under which India and Pakistan agreed to settle differences peacefully through bilateral negotiations. New Delhi has also maintained that any meaningful engagement with Islamabad depends on Pakistan taking credible action against cross-border terrorism. Erdogan Addresses Gaza and UN Reform Beyond Kashmir, Erdogan used his UNGA speech to call for reforms to the United Nations Security Council and greater international action over the humanitarian situation in Gaza. He also reiterated Türkiye’s support for wider recognition of a Palestinian state. Erdogan’s latest Kashmir remarks come amid increasingly close strategic relations between Türkiye and Pakistan, including expanding defence and diplomatic cooperation.
