India’s total exports of merchandise and services were estimated at $80.14 billion in July 2026, registering a 13.3% year-on-year increase. The strong performance was led by a sharp rise in merchandise shipments, supporting India’s broader export growth during the current financial year. Key sectors contributing to the increase included petroleum products, electronic goods, engineering goods, organic and inorganic chemicals, cotton yarn and handloom products. The latest figures indicate continued overseas demand across several major Indian manufacturing and industrial export categories. Merchandise Trade Deficit Widens Despite stronger exports, India’s merchandise trade deficit widened by about 31.5% compared with the same month last year, reaching approximately $15 billion in July. A trade deficit occurs when the value of merchandise imports exceeds goods exports. The widening gap indicates that imports also remained substantial during the month despite the strong rise in outbound shipments. Services exports continued to provide important support to India’s overall trade performance alongside merchandise exports. April-July Exports Maintain Strong Growth Cumulative merchandise exports during April-July 2026 were estimated at $173.78 billion, representing an increase of about 17% compared with the corresponding period a year earlier. The sustained growth during the first four months of the financial year provides momentum for India’s export sector as the government continues efforts to expand manufacturing, diversify export markets and strengthen international trade partnerships. The performance of electronics, engineering goods and chemicals will remain particularly important for maintaining export growth over the coming months.
