Demonstrations over rising living costs and deteriorating educational conditions escalated into clashes with police, vandalism and looting across several French cities, resulting in thousands of arrests. Macron Condemns Violence During France Protests Addressing the nation on Sunday, October 18, Macron expressed anger over the destruction of public property and attacks on businesses. He warned that individuals responsible for looting and attempts to destabilise the French Republic would face legal consequences. The president blamed what he described as radical far-left elements and criminal groups for the violence. However, he distinguished between peaceful demonstrators expressing legitimate grievances and those engaging in criminal activities. Macron instructed regional authorities to coordinate with local officials and police to strengthen security around public buildings and commercial establishments. France Riots Leave Buildings Damaged The demonstrations attracted approximately 550,000 participants, according to government estimates, while organisers claimed around 800,000 people attended nationwide. Violence was reported in Paris, Marseille, Lyon, Bordeaux and other cities. In Limoges, a fire severely damaged the historic 19th-century city hall, causing part of its roof to collapse. Authorities reported approximately 2,400 arrests during the unrest. Police also faced criticism over their handling of demonstrations, including allegations of excessive force. France Political Crisis Deepens Ahead of 2027 Election Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez defended the right to peaceful demonstrations but condemned attacks on public infrastructure and businesses.
