Ukraine has reported sudden restrictions on Elon Musk's Starlink satellite communications system, disrupting military drone operations amid worsening relations with the United States. The developments follow President Trump's decision to ease sanctions on Russian diesel exports, raising concerns in Kyiv about Washington's continued support for Ukraine's defence. Ukraine Reports Starlink Restrictions Affecting Military Drones Ukrainian presidential adviser Serhii Beskrestnov said the restrictions were introduced without warning, affecting military-grade Starshield terminals used for drone operations. According to Beskrestnov, terminals were subjected to a speed limit of 160 kilometres per hour, disrupting reconnaissance, offensive missions and drone interception capabilities. Ukraine's 7th Air Assault Corps reported that connectivity problems forced some drone missions to be cancelled. Elon Musk maintained that decisions concerning Starshield's military operations fall under US government control rather than SpaceX's independent authority. Trump Eases Russian Diesel Sanctions Amid Energy Crisis The restrictions coincided with Washington's decision to relax sanctions on Russian diesel exports to address rising global fuel prices. President Trump announced that Russia would supply more than 300,000 metric tonnes of diesel, with additional shipments expected in November. The decision has drawn criticism from Ukrainian officials, who argue that renewed Russian energy revenues could support Moscow's military operations. However, no evidence has established that the Trump administration ordered the satellite restrictions in connection with the diesel agreement. Zelenskyy Questions US Support for Ukraine Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed disappointment over Washington's changing position, describing the weakening partnership as painful. He also raised concerns about reported disruptions to US intelligence sharing, particularly warnings concerning incoming Russian missile attacks. Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski questioned the satellite restrictions, highlighting the implications for European countries financing Ukraine's connectivity. The developments have renewed concerns about Ukraine's reliance on foreign-controlled communications infrastructure during the continuing conflict with Russia.
