The Delhi Cabinet has approved the Delhi Electric Vehicle Policy 2026, setting a phased roadmap to move key transport segments towards electric mobility and reduce vehicular pollution in the national capital. Delhi EV Policy 2026 Approved The new policy proposes a major push for battery electric vehicles over hybrids and fuel-powered vehicles. It is expected to come into effect from July 1, 2026, after final approval, and remain valid until March 31, 2030. The policy focuses on high-use vehicle categories such as two-wheelers, three-wheelers, light commercial vehicles and school buses. Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said the government will invest around ₹15,000 crore in incentives and charging infrastructure under the new framework. Petrol Diesel Vehicle Registration Rules Under the policy, new registration of petrol and CNG two-wheelers will be stopped from April 1, 2028. For three-wheelers, only electric vehicles will be eligible for new registration from January 1, 2027. Light commercial vehicles in the N1 category will also be pushed towards electrification. The government has framed the transition as part of Delhi’s larger effort to reduce transport-linked emissions and improve air quality. EV Subsidies And Charging Infrastructure Electric two-wheelers will receive purchase incentives of up to ₹30,000 in the first year, while electric three-wheelers will get subsidies of up to ₹50,000. Light commercial EVs will receive incentives of up to ₹1 lakh. Electric cars priced below ₹30 lakh will continue to receive road tax and registration fee benefits. The policy also targets 32,000 public EV charging points during its duration. Schools will be required to electrify part of their bus fleets in phases, starting with 10% within two years.
