They also expressed concern about political controversies involving the judiciary and armed forces, arguing that such disputes could weaken public confidence in democratic processes. Academics Invoke Ambedkar's Warning Against Anarchy The signatories referred to B.R. Ambedkar's warning against abandoning constitutional methods in favour of disruptive political action. They alleged that pending judicial matters were being politicised and amplified through street demonstrations, potentially undermining constitutional governance. However, the statement did not identify any particular protest organisation or political party. The signatories acknowledged that dissent remains essential to democracy and urged political groups to resolve disagreements through dialogue, debate and constitutional mechanisms. Election Commission Protests Form Backdrop to Appeal The statement comes amid opposition protests against the Election Commission's Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and other opposition politicians have alleged irregularities in the revision process and challenged it before the Supreme Court. The Election Commission maintains that the exercise is intended to update electoral records. On October 15, the Supreme Court issued notices to the Election Commission and senior election officials in connection with the legal challenge. The academics' appeal adds another perspective to the continuing national debate over electoral transparency, democratic accountability and constitutional institutions.
