In his resignation letter, he said the interests of students and the nation must come first, and framed his exit as a way to keep students’ futures from getting trapped in prolonged political and legal conflict. That moment matters beyond Delhi because it establishes a simple but powerful idea: when examination governance fails badly enough, political accountability is not optional. That is why the question now cannot stop with the Centre. If resignation is the accepted response to a major breakdown in public trust at the Union level, then the same standard should apply to the states where exam integrity has also been seriously compromised. Punjab and Karnataka are not being named for rhetorical balance; they are being named because both states have faced concrete exam-related scandals this year, each of which shook confidence in the fairness of the system. The principle is simple: students do not experience governance in compartments, and they certainly do not care whether a failure happened in Delhi, Chandigarh, or Bengaluru. The Principle The education sector is built on trust. Students prepare for months, families spend money, and institutions ask for discipline, patience, and belief in the system; in return, the state owes them a clean, credible examination process. When that process collapses, the damage is not limited to one paper or one recruitment cycle; it infects the confidence of an entire generation. That is why accountability in education cannot be treated as a symbolic gesture only when the Centre is under pressure. Pradhan’s resignation, whatever one’s view of the politics around it, creates a precedent. It says that student anger, public protest, and repeated exam failures can eventually force the highest level of education administration to answer politically. Once that threshold has been crossed, it becomes difficult to argue that state education ministers should remain insulated when comparable failures have happened on their watch. Accountability, if it means anything, must be consistent. Punjab’s Exam Breakdown Punjab’s case this year is not a trivial allegation of misconduct; it is a serious recruitment-exam cheating racket. Police said they busted an inter-state network during the Pharmacy Officer recruitment examination conducted by Baba Farid University of Health Sciences, and detained 35 people, including seven alleged conspirators and 28 candidates. Reports said the operation involved miniature Bluetooth devices, pen cameras, and real-time answer transmission, with candidates allegedly paying large sums to secure help. That is not just exam malpractice; it is organized fraud. This matters because it goes to the credibility of public recruitment itself. When candidates believe that money, devices, and networks matter more than merit, the idea of a fair state exam collapses. That is exactly the sort of scandal that should trigger ministerial accountability, because recruitment exams are where the state proves whether it values competence or connections. A minister cannot claim distance from a system that failed so visibly and so expensively. Karnataka’s Leak Case Karnataka’s situation is different in form but similar in seriousness. In January 2026, police arrested six teachers and detained two minor students in connection with the SSLC preparatory exam question paper leak case. Reports said the papers were circulated through social media and sold for money, and that investigators suspected the misuse of school login access as part of the leakage chain. This was not a vague rumor; it was a documented breach involving educators, students, and digital distribution. The Karnataka case shows how quickly trust can unravel when internal access is abused. The problem was not only that a paper leaked, but that people inside the ecosystem were allegedly part of the leak’s transmission and monetization. For students, the message is brutal: even preparatory exams are no longer safe from manipulation. That is precisely the sort of failure that demands more than routine statements and promises. Why States Cannot Wait The temptation in cases like this is to separate “big national scandals” from “state-level incidents,” as though one deserves outrage and the other only administrative concern. But that distinction does not hold up under public scrutiny. If the same country sees a Union minister resign over exam failure, while state-level exam failures remain unanswered, then the standard begins to look selective rather than principled. That is politically convenient, but morally weak. Punjab and Karnataka should not be treated as footnotes to the national debate. Punjab had a high-tech cheating racket in a recruitment exam; Karnataka had a paper leak case in a school examination setting. Both cases point to a broader governance problem: weak safeguards, poor detection, and the normalization of exam fraud as a recurring event rather than an emergency. If CJP’s campaign is about student justice, then it should be capable of saying this plainly. The CJP Demand The CJP has already helped force exam accountability into the national conversation, and now it must widen the lens to include the states where similar harm has occurred. The demand should not sound like partisan scoring; it should sound like a consistency test. If the movement believes resignations are justified when public trust in education is broken, then it cannot stop at one resignation in Delhi and ignore state-level failures. The language can be direct but disciplined: the Union resignation has created a benchmark, and Punjab and Karnataka must now meet it. That means asking for resignations, or at minimum a clear public explanation of what failed, what corrective action has been taken, and why the ministers in charge should retain public confidence. Anything less would weaken the very argument the movement has built so far. Accountability either applies everywhere or it becomes a selective protest slogan. Closing Argument The deeper point here is not vengeance. It is governance. Students need systems that are fair, secure, and credible, and when those systems fail repeatedly, political consequences are part of the remedy. A resignation at the Centre should not become a convenient endpoint; it should become the starting signal for the states to face the same test. Punjab and Karnataka cannot hide behind the idea that one resignation in Delhi has already absorbed the public anger. Their exam failures are real, their public trust deficit is real, and their ministers should be held to the same standard now applied at the Union level. If exam integrity matters, the test must be equal for everyone.
