A citizen-led campaign calling itself the E20 Janta Party has demanded that motorists be allowed to purchase petrol without ethanol, intensifying the public debate over India’s nationwide E20 fuel policy. E20 Janta Party Demands Fuel Choice The group said consumers should be able to choose 100 per cent petrol alongside ethanol-blended fuel at filling stations. It clarified that it was not demanding subsidies, free fuel or the withdrawal of E20 petrol. Its other demands include clear labelling of fuel blends and the publication of accessible information about their costs and benefits. The campaign has also called for independent studies into mileage, emissions, engine performance and long-term maintenance expenses. The group has additionally demanded the resignation of Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari over the implementation and defence of the ethanol-blending policy. CJP Protest Success Inspires Campaign The E20 campaign emerged after the CJP-led agitation over examination irregularities secured several concessions from the Union government. The outcome encouraged other citizen groups to organise around specific public policy concerns. Motorists opposing mandatory E20 sales have raised concerns about reduced mileage, compatibility with older vehicles and possible increases in maintenance costs. However, claims of widespread engine damage have not been substantiated. A recent nationwide survey found that 75.9 per cent of respondents wanted consumers to have a choice between ethanol-blended and conventional petrol. Government Defends E20 Petrol Policy E20 contains up to 20 per cent ethanol blended with petrol. Its nationwide supply became mandatory from April 1, 2026, with a minimum research octane rating of 95. The government maintains that E20 has undergone extensive testing and has not caused widespread adverse effects on vehicle durability. It has acknowledged a possible mileage reduction of around three to five per cent in some vehicles designed for E10. The Centre has no current plan to increase blending beyond 20 per cent or restore nationwide E0 and E10 supplies. However, unblended premium petrol remains available at selected outlets at a higher price.
